We decided to go up north to pick our halloween pumpkins last year. We ended up finding Freeman Farms and it was such a cute place. We went through a corn maze, rode a canoe, rode a merry-go-round, Shyanne had her arm painted, went to their petting zoo, ate fresh grilled corn, went on a hay ride, and picked out our pumpkins. It was a long day, but well worth the time to just hang out as a family and make memories.

Our 4th of July weekend was pretty quiet and relaxing. On Saturday, July 3rd, our ward had a breakfast followed by a primary bike parade. Actually I don't know if parade is the right word it was more like attending a PIR race with bikes zooming every which way avoiding the "slower drivers". Nathan came up with this idea for Shyanne's bike since the kids were asked to decorate them. I think it turned out pretty cute! Sunday we went to church and I loved singing the patriotic hymns (too bad we only sing them once a year). Shyanne also learned a new song called My Flag. Sometimes when she sees the flag now she'll call it the flag of liberty :)

Finally an update

I know it's been awhile since I've posted anything, but I haven't really been in a blogging mood. So I'll jump right in and let everyone know what's been going on. For starters I was laid off from my job almost 2 weeks ago HALLELUJAH! Normally this would be a bad thing, but I've only been getting about 2 hrs. a night for the last couple of months and they're closing in a couple of weeks anyway. I'm also in the middle of taking an x-ray certification class at Phoenix College so I can be more marketable in the dental field. The next big thing is that Shyanne turned 5 on April 21st! We celebrated that day and then had her party on Saturday, the 24th, complete with a Strawberry Shortcake bounce house and snow cone machine FUN! She loved all of her presents and is excited for next year's party already. She will be starting Kindergarten this coming school year and is on a couple of waiting lists so we'll see which school she goes to. Finally our last big thing is that we are going to be featured in the June edition of B magazine (for Buick owners). There was a question on Facebook about younger people buying a Buick and Nathan answered it then a couple of days later he got a call from their marketing dept. asking if they could feature us and our story in their magazine! Yesterday we went out and did the photo shoot and I'm so excited to see what the finished product will look like. Other than that things are pretty normal around here.

A Phoenix Snow Day

Sunday afternoon I layed down to take a nap when Shyanne bursts into the room and tells me that it's "snowing" outside. So we got our shoes on and went outside and found that it was hailing! I explained to Shyanne that it wasn't snow it was hail and that hail was ice. She said oh well can we just call it snow for today. So here's a picture taken by Nathan of our snow day in Phoenix.

One Year Ago

One year ago today my mom passed away. I think this time of year will always be a little sad, but I love the sweet peace that the story of Jesus' birth brings. What a wonderful blessing the world was given and with that birth, and later death, came the promise of a resurrection. I am so thankful to my Heavenly Father who loved us enough to send his Son and give us the opportunity to be resurrected and be with our families forever. I love my family, I love the gospel, I know without a shadow of a doubt that it's true. I know that if I live righteously that I will one day be reunited with my mom and loved ones. I hope that this season we will be able to feel the Spirit and remember the true meaning of Christmas.

I woke up this morning to some nice rain as I was taking Shyanne to preschool. On the way home from picking her up she asked me how Heavenly Father made it rain. I gave her the best answer I could and she said "well I think Heavenly Father has a hose and can turn it on and off to make it rain". Ah the mind of a child :)

For Halloween this year we decided to go a little traditional and do the doctor and nurse costumes. These pics were taken at our ward's Fall Festival and I have to say it was pretty fun! Shyanne had such a blast playing games, eating cotton candy, going trick-or-treating to different classrooms that she fell asleep in the car on the way home.

Well it's been awhile since my last post and since I know everyone is dying to know what we've been up to (wink wink) I'll fill you in. At the beginning of Sept. Shyanne finished her ballet/tap class and absolutely loved it! She wanted to try soccer next so we signed her up and it's official I am now a soccer mom. Never thought I would be, but I'm sure it'll be fun. On Sept. 9th Shyanne started preschool with Miss Monica and loves being in school again and loves her new teacher and friends. I'm looking for a new job. The job I have now is going to be non-existent come next May and they're having us leave a couple nights each week after only working 2 hrs. UGH! So I'm updating the resume and trying to find a part-time Orthodontic Assisting job. Other than that things have been pretty normal and I'm excited for the cooler weather that will be coming soon hopefully!

Too much National Geographic?

This past weekend when we were at the pool Shyanne decided that she wanted to play crocodiles. So Nathan and I played along being the mommy and daddy then Shyanne decided that she would get us some food. She comes back and tell us "here you go here's a nice unicorn". WHAT?!? We told her that crocodiles don't eat unicorns so she says that she'll be back in a minute. When she comes back she tells us "okay here's your zebra. Mommy you get the head and daddy you get a leg." Wow there's nothing like a National Geographic show to break the cold, hard truth to your kid.

Weekend Getaway

Since I work for the Federal Government I got this awesome deal to stay at the Phoenician. So Sat. after my niece's baptism we drove over and right when we got through the front gates we saw a police car. I thought that's right the President is here this weekend I bet he's staying here. We go up a little further and yup he's staying here all right they had a check point. It was kinda weird we had to turn off the car, pop the trunk and hood while these guys walked around our car with a dog and a pole that had a mirror on the bottom checking the undercarriage of the car. We were clear so we went to go check in and the place was swarming with cops, plain clothes secret service, etc. Then there were people all decked out in their best waiting to meet the President, but we knew he'd already arrived because we saw these guys that looked like S.W.A.T. team members bringing their bags into the hotel. I mean you definitely wouldn't want to mess with these guys! After awhile we got used to all the security and felt very safe seeing as how there were over 2500 police there! We did see President Obama (ok just the back of his head) as he was walking with his security and we did see the W.H. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs. Of course Nathan had to shout "Hi Robert" and he turned looking a little shocked and waved. We were able to enjoy our weekend swimming in 4 of the 8 pools and just relaxing.

The perpetrator a.k.a. The Stinky Plant

On our trip to California and Disneyland earlier this month Nathan wanted to show us the beautiful gardens they have at The Huntington. All I can say is that this place is amazing! They have different themed gardens throughout the property and we didn't even get to see them all. They also have an awesome collection of artwork, books,etc. One of the houses that we went into had info and pictures about science, which Shyanne loved, the human body and light. In the science exhibit they have a telescope similar to the one that Galileo used which was pretty cool to get an idea of what he would've seen. On the property they also have a conservatory which houses exotic plants, etc. They have this one special plant in particular that I believe is called the stinky plant and for good reason. When it blooms it gives off a scent similar to that of rotting meat- good thing we weren't there when it bloomed! It was a big deal and they had people there from the history channel to cover it. I don't think that we were able to see half of the things that we there, but hopefully the next time we go back to California we can stop by again!

Today I've been married to my best friend for 6 yrs. I can't believe how fast the time has flown by! These years have definitely had their challenges and struggles, but through them we've come out stronger and so has our love for one another. I am so thankful that Nathan is such a good husband and father he loves taking Shyanne on hikes, going to fly kites, etc. It also helps that she's old enough to enjoy these things too ;) I love you and am excited for what the coming years will bring!

I can't believe that 4 yrs. ago on April 21st I had Shyanne. She has been such a blessing in our lives and has brought us so much joy! Here are 4 things we love about her:

Challenger Space Center

Before each "mission" the leader talks to the kids about the space shuttle, what happens when it blasts off, etc.

They have craft projects that go along with the planets and they had these cute space helmets the kids could make!

On April 14th I took Shyanne to the Challenger Space Center for kids space place. It's really cool they learn about a new planet each month and even get to simulate what it would be like to take off to the moon in the space shuttle. Shyanne loved it-sorry these pictures are a little blurry!

Proud Mommy Moment

For those of you who don't know I play the piano in Primary and it's been so much fun since Shyanne turned 3 and is now a Sunbeam! I get to see how she acts with her friends in class and see her learn new songs. Anyways on Sunday it was the Sunbeam class' turn to do opening exercises (prayer, scripture, talk) and they had the people to do the prayer and scripture, but no one to do the talk. I had just finished playing some prelude music when I glanced over at the Sunbeam class and didn't see Shyanne. Finally I looked up front and she was sitting in the chairs- she volunteered to give her first Primary talk! It was only a couple of sentences, but she did such an awesome job and we are so proud of her!

The Law Finally Caught Up With Me

After a couple of years I was once again called to perform my civic duty and appear for jury duty. I went last Tues. and was called back in the 2nd group just before lunch. They had us go to lunch and come back and after we sat in a courtroom answering questions from the judge and attorneys. Needless to say I had to come back the next day because they weren't done asking questions. I come back on Wed. and what do you think happens? Yep that's right I was chosen as a juror! So if I don't post in awhile I have a good excuse the trial isn't supposed to end until March 24th or 25th.

So we were driving in the car and a John Mayer song, "Say", came on. The chorus goes "say what you need to say, say what you need to say" and I was singing along when all of the sudden I heard Shyanne's little voice start singing. "Sandwiches need to say, sandwiches need to say" and I busted up laughing. That just made my day!

GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE?

A week ago Shyanne and I went to Nathan's work to bring him some things and while we were there he came out to the car w/some shirts he wanted to try on Shyanne for a Valentine's gift. Well she was pretty tired because she had just gotten out of preschool and we had to run some errands so she was not in the mood to cooperate. As Nathan was holding the shirts up to her she said "Daddy can you hurry I don't want to be here all day"! Nathan and I were completely shocked and started chuckling (quietly) then Nathan asked if I had said that to her and I said no. So it seems like my almost 4 yr. old is turning into a 14 yr. old. If this is what I have to look forward to with a teenager heaven help us ;)

SNOW DAY

Shyanne absolutely loved playing in the snow as you can see. She loved sledding, but would cry whenever the snow kicked up in her face; so Nathan put her behind him and she was as happy as could be and would hurry up the mountain as fast as she could for another run!

A Child's Prayer

So today before Shyanne started eating her lunch I told her that she needed to bless the food and here's what she said. "Dear Heavenly Father... thank you for the food... and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all... amen." I thought it was so cute and had a good little laugh. Hey at least I know she's listening in preschool :)

Time to Vent

For those of you who live in Phoenix or close by this one's for you. Don't go to Little Chops to get your child's hair cut! Let me explain... last Sat. I took Shyanne to get her hair cut and she was so excited because we were going to a place specifically for kids. We get there and everything is going fine until I was told that my $15 I was paying didn't include a shampoo- ok whatever so they sprayed Shyanne's hair w/ detangler and started combing. Her's where the drama starts. The lady doens't hold onto Shyanne's hair and I see her head being pulled back and she starts crying. For once in my life I'm completely stunned and don't quite know what to do so I go to Shyanne and hold her head and comfort her while the lady finishes. Finally she started holding her hair while combing. I felt like such a horrible mom- I should have just stopped and left or asked to comb the hair myself, but I was in a daze I couldn't think. Later on Shyanne tells Nathan in her own words what happens and he calls the store and asks to speak to a manager. They tell him they don't have one so he asks to speak w/ the owner. While speaking w/ the owner he tells him what Shyanne told him and the owner gets offended and hangs up on Nathan. I don't really know what to do except try to write the BBB (they're not listed w/ them) and write a bad review so somebody else won't have to go through this horrible experience.

ARR MATIE

A couple of weeks ago I went out with my dad for our birthday breakfast (our birthdays are on Dec. 23rd) and since he hadn't arrived yet I thought we'd wait outside. Well as we were waiting an older couple, the man in a wheelchair, were leaving the restaurant and he had a patch over his eye. Shyanne excitedly said "Mom he looks like a pirate!" I don't know if the people heard or not, but I had to stifle a laugh and try to explain to her about why he had to wear it. I don't know why, but lately she's become a big fan of Pirates of the Caribbean- yup that's right my little 3 yr. old girl loves Captain Jack Sparrow!

My Mom

This is more for journaling purposes than anything else. My mom passed away yesterday morning and it was a bittersweet time for me and my family. We're sad because she's gone, but happy because she's not in pain anymore and in a better place. I am so thankful for the gospel and the knowledge we have that there is life after death and that because of Christ and the Atonement and Resurrection we too can live again. I don't know how people who don't have this knowledge get through the hard times... this has definitely strengthened my testimony of the gospel and of the temple and the ordinances performed in there. I am so thankful that I had one of the best moms. As I got older she became one of my best friends and always knew what to say in any given situation that just somehow made me feel better. She was one of the best examples of service I've ever seen. As long as I can remember she's always been helping out somehow whether it was taking in meals when others were sick, or giving people rides to whatever appointments they had that day, etc. I never heard her complain. She would always say "treat others the way you want to be treated" and that's how she lived her life. She truly emulated charity, the pure love of Christ.

Preschool Nativity Program

For Shyanne's preschool they did a Nativity Program including some Christmas songs. I didn't get to go, since I was sick in bed, but Nathan went and said Shyanne remembered her part and said it when it was her turn and did such a good job. Way to go Shyanne!

Our Newest Member of the Family...

For awhile now Nathan has been drawing sketches of a solar water heater that he wants to build and today we went out looking for the things he needs to build it. After going to a couple of places we finally found the store we were looking for, or so we thought. They didn't have what we needed, but they called another location and reserved what we wanted. During this time we were looking around the store and found some rabbits. We thought they were so cute so we held them and... yup that's right we are now the proud owners of a brown and white bunny Shyanne affectionately named "Brownie". She is so excited to have her! On the drive home all she talked about is how she is going to take really good care of her and play with her.

When Shyanne comes home from pre-school she always has a paper w/ her of an activity they did or letter they are learning. Monday was no different and just to make sure she really pays attention (I'm sure you know the attention span of a 3 yr. old) I ask her a few questions about her day. The conversation went like this... Me: "What is this new letter you're learning in class"? S: "It's the letter I". Me: "Oh what's this a picture of"? S: "An igloo"! Me: I didn't really want to go into a long explanation about the North Pole which would of course lead to Santa, then Christmas, etc. So I said "There are some in Alaska". Which I believe there are. This year Shyanne reprised her role as Cinderella. She could hardly wait for Halloween to come so she could go trick-or-treating! We went around our block and the next and by the time we came home she was tired, but not too tired to eat candy :)

Sorry if this video is a little grainy, but hopefully you get the idea. We saw this grass on one of our stops and it literally closes up when you touch it- check it out. Shyanne loved this and hey who am I kidding so did Nathan and I. We did this for about 15-20 min. I know, I know we're easily amused :)

We had so much fun this day! We went to the beach with my BIL's, SIL, my niece and 2 nephews. The waves were a lot bigger and harder today so Shyanne just stayed on the beach and played w/ her little cousin who's around her age. She found this swim mask in their bucket of sand toys and asked me to put it on. As you can see she kept it on the whole time and had the cute little imprint of the mask on her face after we took it off :)

Random Ramblings about Fall

I love all of the seasons, but I think if I had to pick one Fall would be my favorite. The hint of a cool crispness in the air and the leaves changing colors to bright reds, yellows and oranges. Sigh... now if only I lived somewhere where this actually happens! I want to see and feel what Fall is like in other parts of the country especially back East. But, I digress... along w/ the cooler temps. and colors I love the decorations of the pumpkins, scarecrows, etc. and knowing that the "holiday season" (to me it's Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas) is coming soon. What is your favorite season?

Pre-K Crush

Shyanne started preschool last week and is 1 out of 2 girls in the class along with 4 boys. So when I went to pick her up today her teacher, Miss Erin, told me that she had to have a talk with her and another boy named Dylan about kissing. I've been told that he is a very affectionate kid and kisses and hugs everyone. I was totally fine with that and even thought it was cute that he has a crush on Shyanne. According to his mom he thinks that she is a "cute girl" w/ "pretty hair". I did have a talk with Shyanne when we got home and told her that it's okay to hug, but not kiss. Good thing I picked her up and not Nathan ;) I called him on the phone later and told him and he started laughing. This isn't supposed to happen for like another 12-13 yrs!

Adventures in Motherhood

So I have a headache and am trying to get some sleep and Shyanne wants me to get her some milk. Ok so I go and do that and as I'm pouring her milk I hear water running and I'm thinking oh she just went potty so she's washing her hands right? Wrong. She comes running out of the bathroom telling me her potty's water is spilling all over the floor. Well it turns out that a whole tub of bum wipes is no match for a porcelain toilet. I'm sure I'll look back on this in a couple of days and laugh, but not right now.

Hawaii 2008

For our family vacation this year we went to the Big Island of Hawaii again. It helps that half of Nathan's family lives there so of course we have to go and visit :) Nathan took tons of pictures during our stay but these are some of my favs. This is the first in a series of posts.

This is taken where the highway ends (literally) North of Kona. Don't the different blue colors in the water and lush green surroundings look amazing?

This is Akaka Falls and is the tallest waterfall in Hawaii. It is a mere 420 ft. drop.

For those of you who have never seen a green sand beach this one's for you. This beach is located on the south point of the island and you have to have a 4WD vehicle to get there.

4th of July

We didn't do too much for the 4th of July since Nathan still had to work :( But, we did go and see fireworks! Shyanne was so excited she kept asking when daddy was coming home so we could go and see the fireworks. I'm glad she was so excited because the last 2 yrs. she wasn't so thrilled. Anyways we got all set up for the fireworks and there was a storm moving in so the wind was blowing and it was lightning like crazy! We waited over an hour for the fireworks to start and as we were about to leave they finally did! I don't remember if it rained that night, but the next Sat. we had the biggest monsoon storm it was so awesome!

Thoughts on the Fourth of July

Since tomorrow is the Fourth of July I just wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude to my Heavenly Father for the country we have to live in. I am amazed at how a rag tag "army" (I use the world loosely because I don't think anyone was really trained in the art of warfare) was able to defeat the most powerful nation in the world. Hearing the different accounts, especially the one of George Washington riding across the battle field and not getting shot even though his cape had bullet holes in it, gives me goose bumps and reminds me that the establishment of this country was all part of the Lord's plan. He gave us this country, the "Land of the Free", so it would be possible to again establish his Kindgom here on the earth. I am grateful to my Heavenly Father for these things and so many more.

Birthday Party at Peter Piper Pizza

We celebrated Shyanne's 3rd birthday w/ Nathan's family by going to Peter Piper Pizza! They have the best pizza in the world! We got an awesome deal on a birthday package and Shyanne hit the jackpot on 2-3 different games and won over 100 tickets on her own! I think the total haul for the night was over 4,300 tickets (thanks to Nathan and his bros.)

This was the first thing she saw when we came in and she had a blast riding it.

Three years ago on April 21st at 4:59 p.m. I gave birth to our beautiful little daughter Shyanne. I can't believe that she's already 3 and going to be going to pre-school in Sept. and primary next year! We love her so much and can't imagine life without her!
